Keeping Christmas: Quem Pastores Laudavere

Quem Pastores Laudavere
15th century carol
setting by Michael Praetorius

Quem pastores laudavere,
The One who the shepherds praised,
Quibus Angeli dixere,
And about whom the Angels told,
Absit vobis jam timere,
  'Abandon your present fears,'
Natus est Rex gloriæ.
The King of Glory is born.

Ad quem Reges ambulabant,
  To Him the Kings walked,
Aurum, thus, myrrham portabant,
  Carrying gold, frankincense and myrrh,
Immolabant hæc sincere,
  Offering them religiously,
Leoni victoriæ.
  For the Lion's victory.

Exultemus cum Maria,
  Let us rejoice with Mary,
In CÅ“lesti Hierarchia,
In union with the celestial hierarchy,
Natum promat voce pia,
Singing a pious song to the newborn,
Dulci cum melodia.
That be sweet in its melody.

Christo Regi, Deo nato,
Of Christ the King, God born,
Per Mariam nobis dato,
Who was given to us by Mary,
Merito resonet vere,
  We should sing the merit:
Laus honor et gloria.
  Praise, honor and glory.
